Greeley Rally Falls Short Against Brewster Lacrosse

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – Horace Greeley battled back from two deficits Thursday but in the end still fell to visiting Brewster, 7-5.

The Quakers (2-2) trailed 5-2 at halftime and scored two quick goals in the third quarter to cut the lead to 5-4. Brewster tacked on another goal in the fourth, but Greeley got one past the goalie in the final minutes to stay within striking distance, 6-5.

Brewster played lockdown defense in the final three minutes, and Greeley never got a clean look at the net for a potential tying goal. The Bears added a goal in the final minute to seal the win.

“It was a battle the whole game,” said Greeley coach Vin DeGregorio. “We knew that we were still in it at halftime. These close games, they can go either way. And today they bested us.”

Cory Ekstrom led Greeley with three goals on six shots and added one assist. Jack Gladstone had one goal and one assist. Brandon Gell also added a goal.

Greeley faces Mahopac on Saturday, and DeGregorio said he welcomes the tough schedule and competition. He said he was confident his team will learn to win close games and Thursday’s effort will help them do so.

“We have all the pieces of the puzzle, we’re just not putting it together,” DeGregorio said. “We’ll use this game as a building block for where we want to be.”
