CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. - Horace Greeley High School's football team will take to the field Saturday for the return of its annual Strongman Competition. The event begins at 2 p.m. on the school's upper practice field.
The 38 competing players will be divided into three weight divisions: up to 165 pounds, 166-189 pounds and 190+ pounds. The players will compete both individually and in teams.
Individual events include an overhead medicine ball toss, where athletes will toss either an 8-, 10- or 12-pound ball for maximum distance; a tire flip, a timed event where athletes will flip a 250-300 pound tire across the width of the football field; and the farmer's walk, a timed event where athletes will hold 80, 100 or 120 pounds in each arm and move across the width of the field.
The team event is a tug-of-war tournament, in which the players will be broken down into eight teams. The first two rounds will be decided in a best-of-three series and the final round will be decided in a best-of-five series.
In the absence of head coach Bill Tribou, who is on an unspecified leave, the competition is being run by the team's assistant coaches and Mike Aidala, a coach with Next Level Speed. Aidala earned All-State honors as the captain and starting quarterback for Greeley between 2004-06.
