Chappaqua School Board Accepts Cheerleading Funding

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -- The Chappaqua school board voted unanimously to accept a $10,000 gift to create a cheerleading program at Horace Greeley High School.

The vote came at the board's April 23 meeting and would re-establish cheerleading at the school. The gift, which is for a two-year period, is from the Krase family.

School board President Jeffrey Mester said Athletic Director Peter Kuczma supports the program. He also said the program would be open to both males and females.

While board member Victoria Tipp voted in favor, she said she was concerned the program might turn into one where girls are cheering on boys and sh wants to avoid that stereotype. Mester was sympathetic to her concerns but felt that the risk of that happening is low.

Last week, the state's Board of Regents gave approval for cheerleading being a recognized sport, Daily Voice reported.
