Horace Greeley Homecoming Returns With A Bang

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – Homecoming returns to Horace Greeley High School this weekend and will once again be headlined with a Friday night fireworks display.

Greeley Boosters President Jim Nottingham introduced the display last year in an effort to make the weekend more family friendly, which school officials believe he accomplished.

“One of the things that I found last year was it’s not just a homecoming rally for the high school students, but it really reached out to entire community,” said school board member Randy Katchis. “Anybody who likes fireworks will be coming here.”

Katchis said the new tradition may end up having some long-lasting effects on the community.

“A lot of the younger youth sports groups will look to say, 'I will be announced in the big stadium in front of the fireworks,'” he said. “Truly, watching these kids run around and the face painting, it was really a highlight for me.”

Nottingham and the boosters have received the blessing of the Chappaqua Fire Department, which will be on hand to supervise. The display will be set up behind a fenced-off area on the baseball field and spectators will watch the fireworks from the stands at the turf field.

“The teams would arrive around 6, start the rally, announce the teams and then the fireworks would be around 7:30,” said booster member Christy Hill. “It’s for all the fall teams. All the athletes have been invited. It should be over by 8:30 p.m. at the latest. Last year we did it and it was a huge success. It was safe. The firemen are on board, the police are on board, we’ve gotten a lot more volunteers this year.”

The weekend will begin on Friday at 4:30 p.m. with a full slate of games scheduled. Field hockey, volleyball and soccer teams will all be in competition throughout the weekend. The games will conclude with Saturday’s 1:30 p.m. varsity football showdown against Tappan Zee High School.
