Chappaqua Welcomes New Assistant Principals

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – Westorchard and Roaring Brook elementary schools will have new assistant elementary school principals to kick off the 2012-13 school year. Westorchard will welcome Karen Ruzzo, and Carol Bartlik will head to Roaring Brook, the Chappaqua Central School District announced.

Ruzzo will be shedding the interim title after taking over for Tammy Ghirardi earlier in the year. Ruzzo previously was the assistant principal and principal at Manhattan New School and has worked as a staff developer.

“We’re very excited to have her,” said Superintendent Lyn McKay. “She has a very strong literacy background. She brings a lot to our district from the moment she’s here, and she’s going to stay with us.”

Bartlik takes over for Roaring Brook’s previous assistant principal, Amy Fishkin, who was recently promoted to the school’s top position. Bartlik has worked as a classroom and reading teacher in White Plains and Bedford.

According to McKay, Bartlik was selected by a search committee from nearly 300 applicants. The committee was composed of teachers, parents, clerical staff and administrators who interviewed the top candidates.

“I am confident that Carol will bring insight, warmth and a commitment to learning that is a perfect match for our Roaring Brook School community,” Fishkin said in a statement.

At Tuesday’s board meeting, the district also announced it has rehired former athletic director Peter Kuczma as supervisor of athletics. Kuczma was the athletic director in Chappaqua until 2002, and has since worked as interim athletic director for the Croton-Harmon and Putnam Valley school districts. He will primarily be working with high school junior varsity and varsity sports.

“I’m going to have a tough time not calling you Mr. Kuczma,” said school board president and former Chappaqus student Alyson Kiesel. “Old habits die hard.”
