A total of 200 members of Greeley's class of 2013 have been rehearsing since January for four performances of the musical based on the 1984 film starring Kevin Bacon.
"I had seen the movie before but didn't want to watch it after I got the part of Ren. I didn't want to steal Kevin Bacon's stuff," says Brian Swinney, who's playing the lead role.
Footloose is about a city teenager who moves to a small town where rock music and dancing have been banned.
"Beaumont is similar to Chappaqua in that it's pretty small. You walk down the street and know someone. But we're not quite as strict and rigid," says Rebecca Canziani, who plays one of Rusty's friends.
Swinney, who'll be a musical theater major at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in the fall, and Canziani, who will be a musical theater major at Muhlenberg College, are also two of the show's four student producers.
"One of our biggest jobs was casting 200 parts during midterm week," says Canziani. "Scheduling is a lot harder than you'd think."
"The best part," according to Swinney, has been "watching jocks who I never imagined on stage coming out, rehearsing and knocking it out on stage." Canziani says, "They were so cute. They'd high-five each other if they got the steps right. They are funny and adorable."
Canziani adds she loves performing in Footloose with her sister and a few friends with whom she has performed since the fourth grade, knowing they may not work together again. "It is amazing to come full circle."
Performances are Thursday, April 11, at 7 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. A few tickets are still available. Proceeds from the show will go to the Horace Greeley Scholarship Fund.
"It's a very high-spirited show. Everyone who comes will have a great time," says Swinney.
