Con Ed Dispute Could Delay Millwood Firehouse Approval

MILLWOOD, N.Y. – A contract dispute between Con Edison and its utility workers has affected the Millwood Fire District's ability to complete its proposal for a new firehouse, said Board of Commissioners Chair Hala Makowska.

The proposal is due back in front of the New Castle Planning Board on Tuesday. Makowska said a written statement recommending the Public Service Commission sign off on an easement through Con Ed's property for drainage purposes is one of the requirements for completing the proposal.

Makowska said the district has come to terms with Con Ed's attorney, but the agreement needs the signature a senior official at the company. She said the contract dispute has made it difficult to find any official and she does not expect to have it signed before its public hearing with the planning board. Con Ed management personnel are performing tasks usually assigned to union workers, who were locked out by Con Ed because of the contract dispute.

"It's just a matter of getting the John Hancock on it and we're done with them," said Board of Commissioners member Alan Schapiro.

Despite not having the signature to complete the proposal, Schapiro is hoping the planning board will grant the district conditional approval, allowing construction plans to be drawn.
