CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. Candida Segarra-Shaw of Chappaqua died June 10 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as Lou Gehrig's disease. She was 48.
Segarra-Shaw worked as a math teacher for Fox Lane High School in Bedford until 2004.
She was born Jan. 3, 1964 in the Bronx, N.Y., to Luis A. Sr., and Ramona Segarra. Nicknamed Candy, she moved to Westchester County in 1982 with her life partner, William J. Shaw.
Segarra-Shaw attended Manhattanville College and received a bachelor's degree in 1999 and a master's degree in 2000. She was hired at Fox Lane High School in Bedford in 1998.
In 2002, she was diagnosed with Lou Gehrigs disease. Through the encouragement and support of her students and colleagues, Segarra-Shaw continued to teach until 2004. That year, she was a recipient of an honorary degree from Manhattanville College.
She is survived by her partner, William J. Shaw; two sons, Joey and Garth; a daughter, Daniella; 10 siblings and a host of nephews, nieces, godchildren, students, health and home-care providers and extended family and friends.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Beecher Funeral Home in Pleasantville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Upper Church of St. John and St. Mary in Chappaqua. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
