Conifer Realty was unknown in Chappaqua at the beginning of the year. But the developer would soon become a household name after it proposed a five-story, 36-unit affordable housing building at 54 Hunts Place.
The proposed building, called Chappaqua Station, quickly met with resistance from many residents who believed it was simply too big for the 0.38-acre property.
Conifer heard the opposition and has since presented several alterations to the initial proposal. Conifer knocked a story off the proposal and also made several aesthetic changes to better fit the character of the town. The changes were not enough for many opponents of the project.
In August, a second affordable housing plan was presented to New Castle officials while in the midst of the already heated discussion over Conifer. The proposed building at 495 King St. was eventually dropped by Mountco Construction, after the builder said it did not receive timely support from the town.
Conifer most recently met with the Town Board on Dec. 11, and the public hearing will remain open until at least Jan. 22.
