WESTCHESTER, N.Y. - The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) will soon be urging Taconic commuters to start looking for alternates routes.
A $26 million, eight-and-a-half-month construction project to rehabilitate the Taconic over the New Croton Reservoir (AMVET Bridge) is set to begin on March 26 and will shut down northbound Taconic lanes from Pines Bridge Road in New Castle to Underhill Avenue in Yorktown.
Traffic will be re-routed to the southbound Taconic, which will be four lanes wide with a concrete barrier between two lanes in each direction. Over the bridge, the speed limit will be lowered to 30 miles per hour.
Beginning on March 1, the NYSDOT will be mailing postcards to residents along the construction area of the bridge, encouraging them to take alternate routes, such as Route 9 or I-684.
New Castle Town Administrator Penny Paderewski recently met with NYSDOT officials and said travel advisories will also be issued immediately on March 25 that will ask commuters to use 511 for daily information on the construction.
During the construction period, AMVET Bridge will be undergoing various repairs. They include new steel hangers, deck support, concrete deck, railings, installation of a new guide rail and resurfacing pavement on the roadway on each end of the bridge.
According to Paderewski, the construction company is schedule to finish on Nov. 9 and will be fined $33,000 every day it finishes late and will receive a $33,000 bonus every day it finishes early.
