CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -- A petition with signatures was submitted for the initiative to force a permissive referendum for the Chappaqua train station lease, according to an announcement posted on the "Our Station, Our Town" Facebook page.

The page, which is for the initiative, included a photo of the submitted paperwork. The reported number of signatures collected was 520, more than the minimum needed. The submission deadline, which was on Wednesday, June 18, was successfully met.

The initiative is backed by Via Vanti! founder Carla Gambescia, Peter Chase and Erin Chase, who submitted proposals to the Town of New Castle for use of the station.

Last month, the New Castle Town Board voted 4-1 in favor of a lease with Love at 10514, which is owned by Leslie Lampert, a former Chappaqua resident who also owns Mount Kisco eateries Ladle of Love and Cafe of Love.

The arguments in favor of holding a referendum were contentions that the request for proposals was not available for long enough and that only one bidder was involved in negotiation.

Supervisor Rob Greenstein and Councilman Adam Brodsky, in recent statements, spoke favorably about Lampert.

Asked for a reaction to the submission, and whether the town plans to challenge the signatures, Greenstein stated: "We're reviewing the petition with our attorneys and considering our options."
