New Castle Memorial Service Honors First-Responders, Those Impacted By 9/11

NEW CASTLE, N.Y. - The Town of New Castle held a 9/11 memorial service Sunday afternoon at Gedney Park in Millwood.

This year’s program paid particular tribute to first responders – those in uniform and those selfless citizens who ran towards danger to help in the face of this unspeakable tragedy, according to Supervisor Rob Greenstein.

The Horace Greeley Madrigal Choir performed the National Anthem, and speakers included Assembly Member David Buchwald, Congresswoman Nita Lowey, and Greenstein.

"Ill never forget where I was when I got a tap on the shoulder in the Capital," Lowey told Daily Voice, recalling the tragic day. "They said a plane hit the World Trade Center. Then, a few minutes later, we got another tap on the shoulder - and we all were told to run. 

"When I think about it, what I remember most is paying condolence calls," Lowey added. "The long lines of people surrounding those who lost their loved ones with love. I'll never forget the churches and the synagogues, the homes of people who were just trying to say to those who lost loved ones that we love you, and we support you. And together we say - may this never happen again."
