NEW CASTLE, N.Y. -- The Town of New Castle is weighing legislation that would raise the age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21.

Supervisor Rob Greenstein is behind the move, which is allowed under state law. New York City and places on Long Island have already raised the age to 21.

"It seems like a no-brainer," Greenstein said. "I encourage Westchester to raise the age to 21."

The town recently banned vape shops within 2,000 feet of schools.

Greenstein admits the law can only be so effective if it just applies to New Castle.

"We're trying to protect our young people from these harmful products," Greenstein said. "
