Millwood Swim Club Revival Not in the Plans

MILLWOOD, N.Y. - New Castle town officials said they have no plans to revive the closed Millwood Swim Club property on Sand Street.

"We would like to help everybody that comes to us. We really would," said Town Administrator Penny Paderewski at an April 5 Millwood Task Force meeting. "But sometimes we have to say no."

The club, now covered in overgrown grass and surrounded by a rusted fence, has been closed since 2009. The town initially considered converting the space into a pocket park or using it to provide easier pedestrian access to the North County Trailway.

Paderewski said she visited the site several times with Town Supervisor Susan Carpenter and County Legislator Mike Kaplowitz and they all agreed that fixing the site would be too much work.

"There’s some dangers there," Paderewski said. "It’s not an area we can easily fix or can do something about. We’ve done a lot of research on this. It’s just a very difficult area for the town to fix."

While Millwood Task Force member Michael Stern would like to see the area improved, he agrees reviving the swim club should not be a priority for the town.

"There’s a reason why those people want to get rid of this," Stern said. "It’s an albatross around their neck and the town shouldn’t have to take their problem. I, for one, don’t think the town should bail them out of the problem they got themselves into."
