ORANGE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo had to make an emergency landing at Stewart Airport due to a malfunctioning helicopter, a spokesman announced in a statement on Wednesday.

"After delivering his final regional State of the State in Albany, Governor Cuomo was on a state police helicopter traveling back to New York City for meetings in the office," said James Allen, the governor's director of communications. Just before 4 p.m., the helicopter filled with fumes that smelled like smoke and the pilot made an emergency landing at Stewart Airport."

The cause of the helicopter's malfunction is unknown and is under investigation, Allen said. He added that Cuomo was on board with two aides and a security detail.

No one was injured and Cuomo has returned to New York City, Allen concluded.

Cuomo, who lives in New Castle, has been on a whirlwind tour as he delivered several regional "State of the State" speeches. The speeches have included a rollout of more than 30 ambitious proposals. For Daily Voice coverage of Cuomo's State of State speech at SUNY Purchase Tuesday, click here.

Stewart Airport is located in New Windsor.
