The body was found on Monday, Aug. 5 just before 2 a.m. near the Oak Street bridge at the Yonkers and Mount Vernon border, according to Yonkers Police Detective Sergeant Frank DiDomizio.
According to DiDomizio, the incident began as a fire at that location. When the flames were put out, members of the Westchester County Department of Public Safety and the Mount Vernon Fire Department realized that a body on the sidewalk had been what was on fire.
Yonkers Police officers then responded and determined that the body had been put in a shopping cart before it was lit on fire, DiDomizio said.
Although it is not known exactly where the incident happened, Yonkers Police assumed the investigation because the body was found within the city's borders.
Officers and detectives are still in the preliminary stages of their investigation, DiDomizio said, adding that the actual cause of death and additional injuries to the victim are not yet known, and reports that the body had been dismembered are not accurate.
The person's identity has not yet been released.
