EASTCHESTER, N.Y. It looks like fall dressed up as winter, and it's not even Halloween yet.
Downed tree limbs are scattered throughout Bronxville, Eastchester and Tuckahoe thanks to the heavy wet snow usually not seen till late November. Bronxville Police Chief Christopher Satriale sent out an alert to all residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
"We have experienced numerous limbs, branches and trees down, making travel throughout the village extremely dangerous," Satriale said. "Conditions are expected to get wors throughout the evening with high winds likely.
In Eastchester, Sgt. Joe Groccia said that police are being inundated by emergency calls. "We have downed trees, downed wires, people with no power and property damage," Groccia said. "It's as bad as a snowstorm in October can be."
It was more of the same in Tuckahoe, police said, citing downed tree limbs and slippery roads. But police said there were no power outages reported and no injuries.
A winter storm watch posted for Westchester County remains in effect through Saturday night and into Sunday. So far the storm has dumped about three inches of wet snow as of late Saturday afternoon. Snow could be moderate to heavy at times before ending and accumulation could total up to eight inches.
Earlier in the day, Keith Dunn and his staff at Value Drugs in Bronxville were down in their storage room gathering ice, shovels and other snow must haves to put on display in the store. "We are prepared, but we didn't think it was going to happen this early," Dunn said. "But we will have everything in order by the times it starts.
In Tuckahoe, Cornell's True Value was bags of rock salt were selling fast. Aloc Ajmera of Scarsdale was at the store early Saturday picking up a supply.
"I had to stock up for the winter anyway, so why not today," Ajmera said. "I think that later today, I am going to be happy I came out today and got ready."
