The blaze began on Wednesday, Oct. 23 just before 6 p.m., when a van containing acetylene gas tanks went up in flames in front of the Somers Fire House at 270 Route 202, according to the Somers Volunteer Fire Department.
Although the blaze happened in front of a firehouse, the department's fire trucks were actually disbursed to other Somers firehouses because of ongoing renovations at that location.
Because of this, crews raced to the blaze from other Somers firehouses and found the van completely engulfed in flames. Crews also confirmed that the acetylene tanks were off-gassing.
Crews soon put out the main body of the fire with a hose line while another hose flowed water onto the off-gassing tanks. Eventually, these tanks were removed from the van.
The blaze caused a closure on Route 202 while crews worked to put it out. The road later reopened after the van was taken away on a flatbed.
