Swimming lead at the Bumpy Jones Classic Long Course Meet in Sarasota, Florida, New Rochelle math teacher Steve Newman was part of the relay for the Sarasota YMCA Sharks Masters squad, topping their rivals from Ventura County, while breaking their world record in the process.
The team of Newman, Bill Brenner, Jack Groselle and Rick Walker narrowly broke the record, with a time of 4:44.34, breaking the Ventura County Masters' former world best of 4:44.58.
Breaking world records is nothing new to Newman and his team. Last year, the Sarasota YMCA team broke another world record in the 800-yard relay at the Shark Tank Short Course Meters Meet - which was also held by Ventura County - by more than 10 seconds, becoming the first team in that age group to ever complete the race in under 9 minutes with an 8:52.74 time.
Relay splits from the Shark Tank Short Course Meters Meet, according to Swimming World Magazine:
- Newman - 1:11.56
- Brenner - 1:20.08
- Groselle - 1:06.98
- Walker - 1:05.72.
