TUCKAHOE, N.Y. Tuckahoe honored its own on Saturday with a parade and celebration for the unbeatable Tuckahoe Tigers boys basketball team who won the New York State Public Schools Class C championship in a 77-66 victory over Middle College High School.
The Tigers have a 25-0 record with senior Sky Williams winning the most valuable player scoring 37 points in the final game and having the lofty title of the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,535 points overall.
Teammates Shyheim Nixon and Justin Nolan each scored 15 points and Mark Raymond added 10 for the Tigers
Nixon was given the tournament's Sportsmanship Award and Nolan was named to the All-Tournament team.
But on Saturday, Williams and his teammates were just kids at their school waiting to leave for a parade in their honor that started at their school and ended at Depot Square.
"I guess I just want to say thank you to everyone," said Raymond.
"I have felt that the community was there with us the whole way through," said Williams.
The championship was the first for Tigers coach Al Visconti, who had coached at Dobbs Ferry High School and been an assistant with the Mount Vernon High basketball program before taking the coaching job at Tuckahoe in 2005.
"I feel so blessed to lead my alma mater through a wonderful year and a state championship season," Visconti said. "I want to thank all of the community, the parents and the school for all of their support."
The Tuckahoe basketball team has not won a state title in basketball since 1981. The Tigers won the Class D state football and baseball championships last year. Forward Nick Reisman is the only player to have been on all three teams.
Now that they won their title and had their parade what will this team of champions do with their free time?
"We're just going to keep playing basketball," said Williams.
