HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. Grant Turner, of Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, led Tuesday a field of 57 amateurs and 31 professionals at the St. Andrews Golf Club in Hastings-on-Hudson. Turner headed the opening round of sectional qualifying for the upcoming 97th Met Open Golf Championship sponsored by MetLife with a 2-under par 69.
Turner secured medalist (low score) honors and a position in next months Met Open Championship, which will be held at Plainfield Country Club in New Jersey Aug. 21 to 23.
David Young of Sleepy Hollow Country Club shot an even par 71 to finish just two shots behind Turner. Stu Kaufman, an amateur from Westchester Country Club in Rye, shot a 2-over 73, followed by Rick Vershure of Quaker Ridge, Reggie Bergholtz of The Golf Club of Purchase and Stephen Clark of Bedford Golf & Tennis Club, each with 74s.
The St. Andrew's layout measured 6,606 yards for the round and served as a food challenge for sectional qualifiers headed for the Plainfield Country Club course, according to Greg Midland of the Metropolitan Golf Association.
