TUCKAHOE, N.Y. The Children Understanding Cultural Differences seventh- and eighth-grade boys basketball teams from Eastchester, Tuckahoe and Bronxville were in action Sunday, with the seventh graders topping Mahopac while the eighth graders fell to Carmel in a close contest.
The seventh-grade squad followed last weeks win with a 46-25 victory over Mahopac to up its record to 6-2 in Tri-County Basketball League play.
The boys have worked well together the past two weeks trying to perfect our 1-3-1 zone and have been receiving some extra instructions from a good friend and fellow coach youth coach Sean Oliver (New Rochelle Jr. Huguenots)," said coach Donald Gunther. "I thought we played defense well, and so did some of the parents who liked that style of play. The parents of CUCD got together and asked if the boys can have extra practice time.
The winners boasted a balanced offense led by Mike Rizzo, who came off the bench to score a team-high nine points on 3 for 3 from the three point line. Isaiah Gunther and Jason Douglas each scored eight points, Jamon Murray had seven and Alex Williams added six points for C.U.C.D. Zachary Tucker had four points and several rebounds and Michael Stellate and Christian Pinto each added a basket.
The seventh graders will host a Mount Kisco team that defeated them 48-45 earlier this season, Sunday at Tuckahoe High School.
Carmel 53, C.U.C.D. 50
Frank Tuason scored a team-high 17 points and Richard Jacobs added 11 for the C.U.C.D. team in a 53-50 loss to Carmel Sunday.
Austin Pope, Brad Pantal, Evan Karanthasis and Trevor Knuth played well for the C.U.C.D. team. Sammy Roque led the offense at point guard and Robert Kiernan also played well.
Despite their 1-7 record, Gunther said the eighth graders are looking for forward to improving and doing well in the playoffs.
The boys have faced some tough luck this season with the loss of a key player and Coach Artie Allen due to illness, Gunther said. Artie is feeling much better but will not be returning this season. This great group of boys has lost some close games.
