BRONXVILLE, N.Y. The Concordia College baseball team took on Queens College for the second straight day Thursday, avenging an earlier loss with a 6-2 victory in the Clippers' home opener.
The Clippers (3-12) scored three runs in the first inning and the pitching and defense held up to seal the win.
Chris Rutligliano (Long Island) drove in the first run with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly and Eastchesters David Perlleshi and David Velázquez (Queens) each drove in another run for a 3-0 lead.
Queens would get on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth with back-to-back doubles that scored two runs to tighten the game to 3-2. Clippers' starting and winning pitcher Jake Matranga of Yorktown cut off the rally by getting two fly ball outs.
Concordia scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning with Perlleshi scoring on a Velázquez single, and Velázquez, who had three hits in the game, scoring on a Queens error to push the lead to 5-2.
Jason Berrios tripled and scored on a single by Luis Gonzalez to pad the lead to 6-2 in the seventh inning.
Matranga pitched 5 2/3 innings, striking out three and allowing four hits and two runs. Anthony Pisano pitched the final 3 1/3 innings in relief to earn the save for the Clippers.
Concordia opens its Central Atlantic Athletic Association (CACC) schedule Saturday against Bloomfield College in a doubleheader that is set to begin at noon.
