TUCKAHOE, N.Y. Bronxvilles Dylan Murray fell behind and dropped the first game of his squash match on Friday, but rallied to advance to the next round of the Pro Squash Tours Pyramid Squash Open.
Murray won, 3-1, and will now face Adrian Leanza, a fellow American representing his country in the international event.
I came off a little flat actually, Murray said. And then I started picking it up when I got to the second and third game. The first round is always hard because you come out cold sometimes, but I was able to get through it and hopefully I play better next round.
Murrays duties were not finished after he earned his final point against Bradbury Thompson. After his victory, Murray had to referee the match between fellow American Faraz Khan and Egypts Assem Salem.
But he would rather have been able to put his feet up and rest for a while.
Thats actually a bummer because you just, youre so sore and you just kind of want to sit back and nothing but you have to ref someone elses match, Murray said.
The tournament features some of the premier junior squash players from around the world, including Murray, who ranks in the top 10 juniors in America. Players from Egypt, England, India and Russia also participated in the event.
Murray said he relishes the chance to be able to test his skills against such diverse competition.
Its great to play with people from other countries and then its also good to get great matches, match after match and just keep getting good competition, Murray said.
Shahid Khan, a pro at Club2800 in Rye Neck, and TG Raubenheimer, from Westchester Squash in Mamaroneck, also participated in the event.
