WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Mercurial Mary Cain, a middle distance runner from Bronxville High School, did more than just break her own state record in the 1,500 meters in a meet Friday. She met the Olympic trials qualifying time.
Cain, a sophomore, ran a Section 1 record time of 4:16.52 in the 1,500 meters in the state qualifying meet at White Plains High School's Loucks Field.
"I'm am relieved and happy to make the time," Cain said as she cooled down on the track. "I can run at the states with less pressure and enjoy the competition. Making (Olympic qualifying time) is amazing. I'm very happy it came here."
Cain, who needed a time of 4:17, which she missed three weeks ago at the Somers High School Invitational with a 4:17.1, has also qualified for the Olympic trials standard in the 800 meters. She must also have a time in the top 30 in the nation to make the trials, which will be held in Oregon in late June and early July.
The track star has set many Section 1 and New York State records, including the 800-meter state record, which she set last month at the Loucks Games. Her 800 was the best time in the nation at the distance for a high school runner this year. Diana Richburg set the New York State 800-meter standard of 2:03.7 on July 21, 1982, at White Plains High School.
"There was a good wind on the back straightaway," Cain said of Friday's race. "That wasn't too bad, though. I had a good finish today."
