Bronxville Repeats as Section 1 Lacrosse Champions

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — The Bronxville boys lacrosse team won its first-ever Section 1 Class C title last year and enjoyed the experience so much it repeated the feat Wednesday, rolling past Hendrick Hudson, 12-6, to win a second straight championship at White Plains High School.

"We've been building a very strong youth program in Bronxville," said junior Jack Grass, who scored twice in the second half to help put the game away. "We have a very good group of guys here, and the younger players really played well to get this win. It's a big thing for us to repeat."

The two-time Section 1 champs will face the winner of a Section 2 and Section 9 regional playoff game Saturday at Clarkstown South High School in a regional semifinal. That offers a chance to advance to the New York State Final Four.

The Broncos got three goals from junior Brewster Warble, three more from Jack's freshman brother Henry Grass, and two from eighth grade standout Reilly Walsh in a 12-goal attack. Will Duncan and Matt Behrens also scored for Bronxville.

Bronxville opened up its offense quickly, scoring four straight goals in the first quarter before Hen Hud recovered and scored three straight goals early in the second period.

"We let Byram Hills back in the game we played in the semifinals, and we didn't want that to happen again. So we came out strong after they cut the score to 4-3," Henry Grass said. "This was a test after they scored, and we knew we had to pad the lead in the secomd half."

Bronxville goalie Eric Pass stopped three shots in the first half and six in the second half.

Hen Hud got goals from Sean Tandy, Jake Koch and Kevin McDermott to cut the deficit to 4-3 before the Broncos scored eight straight times to take a 12-3 lead after three quarters. McDermott scored three more times in the second half to close the score to 12-6.

"We see little kindergarten kids playing youth lacrosse, so we know the young kids are going to keep the program going," Henry Grass said. "We have another year with our juniors, and we want to go deeper into the regionals."
