Bronxville Rallies Past Dobbs Ferry in Opener

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Dobbs Ferry built a two touchdown lead in the third quarter then faded in the final quarter Saturday as visiting Bronxville recovered to pull out a 15-14 victory at Gould Park.

The Eagles (0-1) stifled the Broncos’ running game for most of the first half and took a 14-0 lead. Bronxville (1-0) began its comeback in the third quarter, led by running back Christian Conway, who scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and the decisive two-point conversion that proved to be the difference in the game with 3:20 left on the clock.

Eagles’ quarterback Spencer Avalos, who had to leave the game for several plays in the second quarter due to cramping, gave the Eagles an early lead with a 47-year burst in the first quarter, followed by a point after kick. Dobbs Ferry would score again in the third quarter on an 8-yard run by Eddie Ritch for a 14-0 lead.

Both teams were hit by a rash of muscle cramps and bumps and bruises throughout the game playing on a hot and humid afternoon. The Broncos seemed to feel the heat in a lackluster first half, while the Eagles faded late in the game.

Dobbs Ferry will look for its first win of the season at Valhalla Friday at 7 p.m.

Bronxville will host Hastings in its home opener Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
