Bronxville Football Striving For Section Title

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Bronxville football team is serious about not only winning the Section 1 Class C championship, but also the state championship, and this determination starts with the offensive line.

The offensive line, led by senior tri-captain Petey DeJoy, is setting the tone in practice in a most unusual way.

“The offensive line is working very hard,” said Luke Marrone, a fellow senior tri-captain and slot receiver/free safety. “They are running more than the wide receivers. They are pushing themselves, and they are showing they want to work harder than any other line in the section.”

The Broncos are determined this season, especially with the premature ending to their 2011 season. Bronxville lost to Dobbs Ferry in the Section 1 Class C final. Dobbs Ferry went on to play for the state championship.

The loss to Dobbs Ferry did not sit well with Bronxville, so the underclassmen, led by the current senior class, made the weight room at the high school a second home.

“We were in the weight room before school and also running before school,” said the 6-foot-1, 175-pound Marrone. “We wanted to get bigger, faster and stronger. This year is also about being smarter and being ready to play every game.”

The off-season lifting and running resulted in everyone's coming into practice in better shape, according to Marrone, who said he was happy to see that.

Marrone, DeJoy and fellow tri-captain Matt Tormey, a wide receiver and defensive back, headline the senior class, along with quarterback Michael Dresdale and running back Warren Kramer.

The senior class will be joined by a talented junior class, led by quarterback Will Duncan.

“We have a lot of athletic guys coming out in the junior class,” Marrone said. “They’ve made a huge impression. They’ve been playing Pop Warner since they were young and they are gaining experience playing at varsity speed.”

Bronxville opens the season hosting Woodlands at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8. The Broncos close out the regular season Oct. 20 against Dobbs Ferry.

“Last year the loss to Dobbs Ferry was a heads-up for us,” Marrone said. “In order to get back to the final, we are taking it one game at a time.”
