BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- The year-long courting of Jason Alleyne came to a conclusion recently when the 2011 Salesian graduate signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Concordia College.
Concordina mens basketball coach Brian Sondey was quite pleased when Alleyne contacted him with the good news.
Jason was the first player we recruited and it began at camp last year in Reading (Pa.), said Sondey, a former Pleasantville player. It was Jasons decision as to what level he wanted to play at.
Alleyne, who led Salesian to the Catholic High School Athletic Association Class B state title, consulted with his family and his high school coaches before going with Concordia. Sondey was impressed with Alleynes mature approach to his decision-making.
Jason took the added time because he wanted to make the right decision for himself, Sondey said. His mother and grandmother were always at his games, supporting him, and his high school coaches were there to advise him also. We are extremely happy to have Jason as part of our family.
Sondey and his staff were impressed with Alleyne from the first day they saw him at camp. The one aspect that stood out was Alleynes work ethic.
Jason has great attention to detail in all aspects of his game. He has a natural talent, but he understands natural talent is not always enough to get you a scholarship. He was always working on what he felt was a weakness," Sondey said. "Jason is a basketball player who loves the game. He goes out and executes. He has that toughness and winning attitude.
Sondey kept his fingers crossed throughout the recruiting process, but felt good about Concordias chances.
Recruiting is like a rollercoaster, there are a lot of ups and downs, but we felt we showed Jason that we are a close-knit family, we are building a program and we wanted him to do it with us.
