Since the announcement of current principal Terry Barton last month, the search for a new high school principal has been advertised, and focus groups have been held within the district.

There have been a series of open meetings for parents to discuss the qualities and characteristics the district should seek in principal candidates. Parents and students have also been asked to fill out an online survey listing what is important to them in a principal.

At the high school, they are currently in the process of reviewing candidates’ resumes, conducting initial interviews and compiling a list of semifinalists that will be submitted to a committee of students, parents, faculty and members of the school board. They are hopeful of appointing a new principal in early May.

The process for electing an elementary school principal began in February with an announcement that was e-mailed to parents. Parents attended open meetings, and a focus group was held for faculty members to highlight important characteristics.

The sessions were designed to elicit feedback about the school’s strengths, where it can be improved and what qualities an incoming principal should have.

Advertisements for the position have been placed in the New York Times and regional professional networks have been activated, including the Tri-State Consortium and various universities.

With the initial review of applicants complete, a screening committee is being assembled that will include faculty, the Board of Education and select members of the administration. The committee will interview the finalists and give input to Superintendent David Quattrone, who will make his recommendation to the Board of Education.

An appointment is expected next month.
