EASTCHESTER, N.Y. -- Eastchester High School senior Jon Blanc, destroyed his guitar during the final number his band played on Friday night.
"Cancer destroys people, so I wanted to destroy my guitar," Blanc said. "I think it was a fitting tribute."
Blanc and his band "A Mistake in Evolution," were one of 15 bands that played in the 12th annual Rock Against Cancer show held at the high school.
"Other students have the plays, band and sports, but this is the night where kids who play in bands have their night to shine," said Phyllis Rothschild, who has been teaching business at the school for 27 years.
This year the event raised $1,500 which Rothschild said will be donated to Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital.
"Shortly after we began to hold band night, one of our graduates, John Lucente, died at the age of 28 from cancer," Rothschild said. "Since then we make the donation every year in his honor."
Nick Chilson said his band, "Orion," have been playing together for the last five years.
"We play all original music, Chilson said. "We do the event for an opportunity to showcase our music and to help fight against cancer."
While Rothschild agrees that the cause of the night is serious, she said it is a fun night for all.
"The kids come out, the parents come out, and the kids look forward to it all year," Rothschild said.
