BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- Pirates will be taking over at Bronxville High School and everyone is welcome to come and watch.
Bronxville High School students will sing, dance, move sets and play the music for the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta "The Pirates of Penzance The Slave of Duty."
Performances will be held on Thursday at 5 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and the proceeds will be put into a new fund designated to renovate the high school auditorium.
Director Peter Royal, who teaches drama at the high school, said it is entirely a coincidence that leap year has a significant role in the play.
"When we chose the show, we did not realize that 2012 is a leap year, a very significant factor in the life of the hero," Royal said. "The hero, Frederick, has been apprenticed to a group of pirates for five years, until his 21st birthday. Unfortunately he was born on Feb. 29, and discovers his apprenticeship will last for another 63 years."
Royal said the cast and crew that includes 42 performers, 15 crew members and 15 orchestra members has been rehearsing for three hours a day, nearly every day for the last 10 weeks.
"The kids have really worked hard, its going to be a great show," Royal said. "I hope everyone comes out and enjoys the show.
