The school is hosting the drive until Feb. 6, and has collection boxes throughout the school. Students and staff also will be collecting food outside the A&P on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The need for food is very high this year as a result of Hurricane Sandy, said Bronxville School teacher and food-drive coordinator Glenn Stockton.

"This program is something that we've been doing for years, and hope to continue for years to come," said Stockton. "Last year was a little bit of a down year, but we still managed to collect over a ton of food. It's something that many of the students understand the importance of, and we hope that people respond accordingly."

?The Food Bank for Westchester delivers 10 to 12 tons of food to hungry Westchester residents every day. Neither goods in glass or cardboard containers, nor items with expiration dates will be accepted. Here are some of the most-needed items:

  • Canned goods: (tuna, beef stew, soup, chili, fruits, vegetables, and beans).
  • Goods in plastic containers: (peanut butter, jams, jellies, juice, and ketchup).
  • Personal hygiene items: (toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, and soap).
