Last year, current Superintendent David Quattrone announced his plans to retire at the end of the academic year, prompting the Board of Education to launch their lengthy search for his successor.

On Monday, the Board announced that veteran educator Montesano would take over as superintendent, effective as of July 1.

Montesano comes to Bronxville with nearly four decades of experience in public education. He has been the superintendent of the Hastings-on-Hudson School District for five years and previously served as superintendent of the Ramsey Public School District in New Jersey, where he was honored as Superintendent of the Year for the entire state.

According to Quattrone, who completed his 25th year as a school superintendent last year, the district's administration “believes that the plan in place is in the best interest of the students, faculty, leadership team and the educational program.”

Last summer, the district hired School Leadership LLC as search consultants, who conferred with the community and Board to determine what characteristics are most important in a principal. Following several rounds of interviews with several candidates, the Board settled on Montesano as Quattrone’s ideal successor.

In total, 63 candidates applied for consideration. School Leadership interviewed 22 candidates and narrowed that field to eight, who were presented to the Board. The Board then approved three of the finalists for further vetting, including on-site visits, calls and meetings with references, with Montesano emerging as the top candidate.

During his time in Hastings-on-Hudson, Montesano “provided leadership to take the middle school from a Focus School to a Reward School, maintained strong academic results from students who continue to be accepted into the most competitive colleges and universities, increased STEM offerings for students and developed Makerspaces at the elementary and middle schools,” the Board noted.

“We believe Roy’s extensive experience, leadership, vision and demeanor match well with the specifications developed int he district meetings, community outreach and the online survey,” Board President Jeffrey Rohr said when announcing the hiring. “He has impressed us with his knowledge and passion for educational leadership, his concern for the nurturing of each teacher and student and his vast experience in the financial realm and other areas vital to the superintendent’s role.”
