A busy intersection on Fourth Street has been closed off in Mount Vernon following a serious collision on Tuesday afternoon near the Greater Centennial African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Zion Church that left four - including an infant - with injuries.
According to Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas, the vehicle was “traveling at an excessively high speed and led police officers in Mount Vernon.” During the pursuit, the vehicle crashed into the parked vehicles - prompting an immediate response from both NYPD and Mount Vernon Police officers.
The driver and a passenger were taken into custody, while a female passenger in the backseat of the vehicle, who was holding an infant, sustained “significant” head trauma and is in critical condition at Jacobi Medical Center. The infant is in stable condition.
Mount Vernon Police Department and NYPD officers have declined to comment on the crash.
“This is a tragic accident, and we are hoping there is no loss in life,” Thomas stated. “Mount Vernon extends its full cooperation to the New York Police Department and ask that people pray for the injured backseat passenger and child.”
