BRONXVILLE, N.Y. Ten days before Republicans and Democrats in the Village of Bronxville will hold nominating caucuses, sitting trustees Anne Poorman and William Barton have announced that they will not seek re-election to their seats.
Poorman has served on the village board for seven years. The first to fill the remainder of then Trustee Mary Marvin's term, when Marvin became mayor, she was subsequently elected for two three-year terms. Prior to her tenure on the village board, Poorman served as a five-year member of the Zoning Board of Appeals.
"All good things must come to an end," Poorman said. "This has been the best volunteer experience of my life. I will miss the work and I will miss the people."
Mayor Mary Marvin said that Poorman has been diligent, and professional, and said that over the years on the board she and Poorman had become friends.
Poorman's announcement was closely followed by Barton's stating that he would not seek another term on the board either.
"It was a difficult decision for me, considering how much I enjoy serving the people of this village," Barton said. "But it is time to pass on the torch."
Barton manages investments for high net worth individuals at Goldman Sachs where he has worked since 1976. He has served on the Community Fund of Bronxville, and has been on the Bronxville Village Board since 2006.
Marvin said she will particularly miss Barton financial skills and his determination to bring order to the village Department of Public Works.
"This is a really sad night," Marvin said. "It will be a long time before I forget the meeting of Jan. 17, 2011.
The village will hold elections to replace Barton and Poorman on March 20. Interested candidates must win the support of their party at nominating caucuses, which will be held on Jan 26 at 7 pm.
The Republican caucus will be held at Village Hall and the Democratic caucus will be held at the Bronxville Library.
Perspective candidates must be a registered voter within the party where they are seeking a nomination.
The perspective candidate attends the caucus and must be nominated and the nomination must be seconded by a member, but not by the candidate him/herself. The candidate with the most votes wins the party line unless a second candidate takes up a petition to force a primary.
All of the members of the Bronxville Village Board are Republicans except for Mayor Marvin who is a registered Independent.
Voting will take place at Village Hall on March 20 between 6 am and 9 pm.
