TUCKAHOE, N.Y. -- For the first time in a long time, Tuckahoe business woman Nicole Pushkal was happy to look out the window of her Main Street shop, Nicole Interiors.
Pushkal learned today that the Tuckahoe Village Board authorized hiring the law firm of Silverberg Zalantis LLP of White Plains to represent it in legal action against an abandoned building located a few doors down from Pushkal's shop.
Known throughout the village as the "blue building," the property at 99 Main Street was once the home of the Tuckahoe Fish Market. It has been vacant and allowed to literally crumble in disrepair.
The village currently spends approximately $400 per month for a street shed/bridge, which was installed in 2006 after chunks of the building started falling away.
Tuckahoe has a lien against the owners for more than $25,000 for the cost of the street shed/bridge. The Village Clerk's office reports that taxes are current on the property and the Building Department said there have been no fines levied against the property because the owner never answered the summons to appear in court.
The current owner of the property is P&N Tiffany Properties. According to the New York State Division of Corporations, Vivian Hausch and Carol Duda are listed as owners of P&N.
The village has not been able to find either of the principals of the corporation and the building has been in decline for about 10 years.
"We have to do something," said Mayor Steven Ecklond. "Initially, this will cost us money. But ultimately, it will solve the problem of this unsafe eyesore in our village."
Pushkal, who lives in Eastchester, agrees.
"Look at our village, look at how beautiful it is with our lighting and flowers, " Pushkal said. "Then we have this dangerous eyesore. It's ruining our village and I can't wait to see it repaired."
