Tuckahoe Friends of the Library in Business

TUCKAHOE, N.Y. – Not only are The Friends of the Tuckahoe Library friends of the library, they are also friends of shoppers. The Friends are selling coupons for $5 each that will net supporters three savings coupons at the Lord & Taylor store located on White Plains Road on the Eastchester–Scarsdale border.

First, there will be a 15 percent off savings pass, to be used throughout the day only on Nov. 10. The pass can be used on almost everything in the store, including cosmetics and fragrances. Then shoppers will also receive a 20 percent off coupon to be used on one item. Finally there will be a 25 percent discount coupon that can be used on one item in the men’s department or on an item from ladies sportswear, dresses or suits. 

This is only the second fundraiser held by the Friends, which just became an official charity about a year ago.

“I raised my kids in Tuckahoe and as a teacher and a parent, I know just how important a library is to a community,” said Mickey Brand, director of the Friends Tuckahoe chapter.  “The library gives so much to our residents, so much to the community, I wanted to give something back.”

A year ago, Debra Coppola, library director, said she watched the library lose hours on Sundays due to budget cuts. In dealing with a tough economy and the excessive use of the Internet, the Friends have a special meaning to Coppola.

“It means that we have people who are willing to give up their free time to raise money for the library,” Coppola said.  “The library has already received museum passes which are lent out to the public and help with the summer reading game for children, teens and adults.”

Coppola said The Friends have taken on fundraising projects that were previously done by the library staff, which now frees them up to run the library. “They are hardworking, dedicated, library supporters,” Coppola said of the Friends of the Tuckahoe Library. Coppola sentiments echo the nationwide movement to honor Friends of the Libraries groups with the sixth annual National Friends of Libraries Week, which began last Sunday.

The acknowledgement was coordinated by the Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF), a division of the American Library Association with approximately 5,000 Friends of the Library, trustee, foundation and individual members and affiliates representing hundreds of thousands of library supporters.
