TUCKAHOE, N.Y. There was dancing in the streets last night in Tuckahoe as police and families came together to celebrate and talk about safety.
For the last six years, Tuckahoe police has participated in the nationwide celebration dubbed National Night Out.
Lt. Peggy Belles, who organizes the event each year, said the event is always held on the first Tuesday in August.
"We create a fun event in order to foster community and police partnership," Belles said. "We want the police and the community to get up close and personal."
Belles arranged for all sorts of events for cops and community to share, including a whiffle ball batting cage, a basketball toss, music and games.
Tuckahoe Police were letting people try on special goggles that display how it feels to be intoxicated.
Staff members from the office of Senator Jeff Klein (D-Tuckahoe) were on hand to provide a set of their childrens fingerprints for parents to keep at home.
Anthony Fucci, of Cape May, N.J., was visiting family and had his two boys, AJ, 7, and Eddie, 4, fingerprinted. "I think it is a great idea," Fucci said. "A good thing for parents to have in this day and age."
Officer Scott Delfa, of the Correction Officers Benevolent Association of Westchester, brought along Corey.
"Corey is an animatronic robot we bring to schools and events," Delfa said. "It teaches kids about strangers, and provides information that will help keep kids safe."
The Eastchester Volunteer Ambulance Corps were also on hand providing an occasional band-aid and a tour of the ambulance.
"None of this would be possible without the generous support of the Eastchester, Tuckahoe, and Bronxville Community Fund," Belles said. "We want everyone to bring their families out and join us for a good time."
