Tuckahoe BOE Appoints Interim Superintendent

TUCKAHOE, N.Y. -- The Tuckahoe Board of Education hired an interim Superintendent of Schools at a special meeting Tuesday night.

Dr. Edward J Reilly of Queens was sworn in after he was unanimously confirmed by the Board of Education. Reilly previously served as Superintendent of Schools for the Port Jefferson, Long Island School District and was retired.

Board of Education President Dr. Julio Urbina said the board has agreed to pay Reilly $1,050 per day.

"We were told that we should expect to pay anywhere from $1,000 to $1,500 per day, so we feel like we got a good deal," Urbina said.

Urbina said the board expects Reilly to work full-time on all the days school is in session. "We need a superintendent to take care of the resources of the district and make sure all of those resources are functioning independently and collaboratively to ensure the success of our students," Urbina said.

Urbina said the Board of Education has begun to interview search firms, the first step in finding a permanent superintendent. However, he does not expect the search to end quickly.

"We anticipate having Dr. Reilly in place for the entire 2011/2012 school year," he said.

Outgoing Superintendent Dr. Michael Yazurlo resigned at the May 17 Board of Education meeting. Yazurlo, 62, of Yonkers, has headed up the district since 1998. His last day is expected to be Friday.

Urbina said the Board will meet again on August 22. "We will be introducing Dr. Reilly to the community and making other appointments," he said.
