BRONXVILLE, N.Y. Eastchester residents have another road project looming, this time in the Village of Bronxville. However, some village officials are questioning whether or not Bronxville should foot the projects the bill.
The Bronxville Village Board has been advised that the Parkway Road Bridge, located at the east end of the village, has been flagged by the New York State Department of Transportation in need of repair.
We are now required to do an investigation, explained Village Administrator Harold Porr.
Bronxville will shell out at least $6,000 for an initial inspection of the bridge, Porr said. He told the trustees he may return to them for additional funds depending on whether further examination of the structure is required.
The bridge is a gateway from Yonkers into Bronxville, but it is also a gateway onto the Sprain Brook Parkway. But at least one trustee wondered if the bridge truly fell under the ownership of the village, given its location. Porr said the bridges ownership has yet to be determined.
That is a simple question with a somewhat complicated answer, Porr said. In the end we may not have to pay the final bill for repairs.
Porr said the bridge is compromised in two locations and special equipment will be placed in those locations under the structure to determine the extent of the damages and what kind of repairs will be needed.
Regardless of who is footing the bill, if the bridge is closed, motorists will have to circle around the west side of the village to get onto the Sprain Brook Parkway or to travel into that side of Yonkers.
Currently, the gateway to the village on the west side has been reduced to a single direction into the village due to a sewer repair project.
In Tuckahoe, Yonkers Avenue has been closed for months while a retaining wall under the bridge there has been demolished and is now under reconstruction. Residents of Tuckahoe have been forced to take wide detours to get around town.
The Yonkers Avenue project is not expected to be completed until the spring and the project on the west side of Bronxville is expected to be completed by the end of January, Porr said.
As for the coming repair on Parkway Road, Porr said that repairs will be a topic the board will revisit.
