BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - Lawrence Hospital staff and officials were seeing red Friday at the annual celebration of Wear Red Day held in the hospital lobby.
"The day is a reminder that heart disease is the number one killer of women in the U.S.A.," said Ellen Petti, a coordinator of resources for stroke victims at the hospital. "There is a wealth of information about heart health available and every woman should be aware."
But dietician Denise Kiklis knows that taking ownership of health and diet can be a daunting task.
"It can be overwhelming with all of the diets out there," Kiklis said. "But you can see a dietician for advice, or you can start small and simple."
Henry and Rosemarie Doerr of Bronxville attended the event to learn about how evolving technology can provide early detection of heart disease.
"I think the ways they can diagnose things these days, especially heart disease, is fantastic," Henry Doerr said.
Dr, Steven Koch who is chief of radiology, spoke about a diagnositic test that can detect deadly levels of plaque clogging heart arteries.
"The first symptom of heart disease is sometimes a heart attack," Koch said. "But sometimes a first heart attack is fatal."
Hospital staffer Roseanne Alonzi works in the development office, but she came to the event to learn about the procedure done by Koch and learn about how diet can help control the disease.
"I wanted to learn more, especially about how diet and lifestyle can make sure you don't get to that point," Alonzi said.
Michelle Pollack, the assistant director of patient safety at the hospital said she is going to think about getting the test performed by Koch.
"It's better to know and start working on correcting the problems now," Pollack said.
