Fifth-Graders Deliver Valentines, Music to Seniors in Eastchester

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Young voices joined the voices of senior citizens as a round of "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" rang out Monday afternoon at Lake Isle Country Club in Eastchester.

This is the 20th year in a row where kids who attend Eastchester's two elementary schools, Anne Hutchinson and Greenvale, performed a Valentine's Day concert for the senior citizens who attend the Eastchester seniors program at the town-owned club.

The students, all fifth-graders, came armed with homemade valentine cards and their cellos, violins and other instruments to serenade the seniors.

"They were excellent," senior Dom DeSantis said. "We enjoy having them around."

"They are all so precious," added Ann DeSantis, who made it a point to sit close to where the kids were performing.

Eastchester elementary school music teacher Suzanne Greene, who started the program during her first year with the district, travels with the kids each year to the performance.

"They look forward to it and they have a great time," Greene said.

Greene said there were roughly 40 kids at the Monday afternoon event that has become a Valentine's Day tradition.

Bill Weber said seeing the kids reminds him of his days as a student at Greenvale School. He and his wife Joan, who have been married for 64 years, said they enjoy hearing the kids perform.

"They were just great," he said. "We really enjoy hearing them."

But Weber said he didn’t need their help orchestrating his and Joan’s Valentine’s Day celebration.

"We have been celebrating Valentine's Day every day for the last 64 years," Weber said.
