HARTSDALE, N.Y. Several hundred Westchester residents are expected to immerse themselves in the Irish culture Sunday in Hartsdale when Westchester Irish-Americans celebrate their heritage with a daylong festival at Ridge Road Park.
Starting at 1 p.m., visitors will have a chance to sample Irish foods, such as corned beef, and shop for arts and crafts while enjoying traditional Irish entertainment throughout the afternoon.
The event will start following a noon Mass and open with music from Padraig Allen and the McLean Avenue Band, said Sue Fuller, president of the American Irish Association of Westchester and chairwoman of the event.
The Pipes and Drums of the Westchester County Police Emerald Society, the Guss Hayes Band and the O'Rourke Irish Dancers will follow, along with a concluding performance by the popular Cray and Dempsey group, she added.
It's a great way to show your Irish pride, learn something about the Irish culture and have corned beef from JC Fogarty's, Fuller said. We will also have more activities for children than in the past.
Admission for children under 14 is free. Face painting, a scavenger hunt and arts and crafts activities are planned, Fuller said.
The Be Fit Mobile from Westchester County Parks, which is co-sponsoring the 34th Annual Heritage Day along with the American Irish Association of Westchester County, also will be at the event. Adults and children will have the opportunity to explore staying healthy and fit while enjoying the hula hoops, soccer balls, jump ropes and agility ladder provided by the mobile and participating in organized games.
Parking is free at the event and adult admission is $5. The festival will be rain or shine and visitors are allowed to bring blankets or chairs for seating on the lawn, but coolers are prohibited. Additional information can be obtained at the organizations website.
