End of an Era for Eastchester Library

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. --  Eastchester Library users watched the end of an era this Saturday as long-time children’s librarian Mary Feldhaus said her goodbyes.

Feldhaus, known by one and all as Miss Mary, will leave the library and the area and move to the Boston area to be near her family.

Library Board President Paul Cartolano said that one of the most amazing things about Feldhaus is her memory.

“She knows all the kids names, she knows who their friends are and what they were reading the last time she saw them,” Cartolano said. “She truly has a gift.”

Friends of the Library President Vivian Zelvin has worked with her for 15 years. “The children adore her, and she has been an absolute joy for me to work with her over the years,” Zelvin said.

Cartolano said that the legacy Feldhaus left is a strong program for kids that she helped create.

"We will move on, but there is no doubt that we will all miss Miss Mary deeply," Cartolano said.

Feldhaus has been a librarian for 30 years, 15 of them at Eastchester Library. “I have always been a children’s librarian,  I absolutely love it,” she said in an interview last year. “I would not have it any other way.”
