EASTCHESTER, N.Y. There are secret Santas in the Eastchester School District, and they are filling stockings for soldiers.
Members of the Eastchester Teachers Association are giving empty stockings to anyone who asks on the condition they fill them up and return them.
Middle School math teacher Robin Cohen has lost count of how many stockings she has received, but she said the response has been overwhelming.
"We have had donations from teachers, administrators and employees from the district offices," Cohen said. "Everyone has participated."
Cohen said participants are given a list which contains ideas for things the soldiers need, such as sweets, phone cards and iTune cards. The average contributor spends about $50 on filling a stocking.
Participants fill the stockings with items from the list and bring them to Cohen who delivers them to Operation Homefront.
"We have some of the students writing letters to the soldiers to go along with the stockings," Cohen said.
Operation Homefront offers a wide variety of assistance programs to soldiers and their families with options as varied as Easter baskets and Christmas stockings to support for the families of wounded soldiers.
"The two things that are the most important things to know is that people from all five schools and the administrative staff have been involved in this effot," Cohen said. "The second thing is that we have all come together to support our soldiers who are spending the holidays away from their families."
