EASTCHESTER, N.Y. The Fun and Fit Running for Kids class already has a wait list, and Sports Squirts is filling up fast. The classes are part of the fall recreation program sponsored by the Town of Eastchester Recreation Department
Recreation Supervisor Sally Veltidi said that roughly 1,000 kids participated in one or more of the activities last fall which are open to residents of Eastchester, Tuckahoe and Bronxville on a first come first served basis.
"We have our staples like the Mommy and Me classes, the tennis classes and the Eastchester Basketball league that are enormously popular," Veltidi said. "But every year we try to add a few new things.
Last year the running for kids class was new, and was extremely successful, Veltidi said.
"The kids love it and the instructors are wonderful," she said of the class that teaches the importance of warm ups and cool downs, and features non-competitive running relays for kids ages five through eight years old.
This year, Veltidi has a couple of new classes on the roster as well, one of which is Haindl Hockey, for four and five year olds. The class will be held on Haindl's turf field and foam coated hockey sticks will be used.
An old favorite will also be added to the roster this season as the Lego Group comes back to town. Kids ages 6 to 9 can indulge their Lego building passions with a new project each week, or a single large scale creation.
Two new crafts classes will be offered, one at Haindl Field clubhouse for kids ages three to five where a story is read followed by a matching craft, and a second at the Pathways School where 5-7 year old kids will work on different projects each week.
There are even a few classes for adults such as tennis for beginner and intermediate levels and co-ed volleyball which is held on Wednesday nights in the high school gym.
Veltidi said that most of the classes will start at the end of September and registration can be done on-line at www.eastchester.org. Or you can stop by town hall and pick up a brochure and either bring in or mail in the attached registration form.
"We try to have something for everyone," Veltidi said. "We want to offer as many choices as we can."
