Eastchester High School Presents JazzCo Weekend

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – When Charlou Woodrow started teaching dance as one of the lessons in a high school gym class in 1969, she could have never predicted what that would come to mean to the Eastchester School District.

From a class in gym, the dance troupe evolved, Charlou said. But it was in 1984 that JazzCo began. Since then, the kids at Eastchester High School have entertained the community with dance of all kinds each year.

This year, 115 kids will perform from Feb. 2 through Feb. 5. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors, kids and families of the performers.

Woodrow, who retired from teaching in the district in 2003, still puts on the show every year.

"We have incorporated just about every kind of dance you can imagine in this year's show," Woodrow said. "We even have ballet in the show this year.”

Other numbers will showcase hip-hop, jazz and tap – all performed by Eastchester High School students.

At practice on Friday night, the kids were fine tuning the music and the moves in anticipation of the show.

JazzCo alum Christa Napolitano, class of 2005, has comeback every year since she graduated to help out with the show.

"I love JazzCo, I just can't stay away from helping out with the show," said Napolitano, who is now a math teacher in Somers.
