County Shopping Center Adds Stores, Restaurants

With the opening of more than two dozen stores including GUESS, bebe and TGI Friday's, the Cross County Shopping Center proved this week that the attractions of the County’s oldest retail and entertainment mecca are keeping current with the years.

The 57-year old Westchester landmark kicked off its “RE-Launch Celebration Week” this Tuesday afternoon with a "VIP RElaunch and Luncheon." Celebrating the completion of a five-year and $250 million redevelopment, the retail space now boasts everything from renovated public restrooms to 32 new stores on site.

Other retailers set to open soon will be Chipotle, Noodle Friday’s, Red Lobster, Adidas, Call it Spring and GNC.

“The re-development positions it as a go-to destination for shoppers for years to come and it’s a sign of confidence in the county’s continuing economic growth,” County Executive Robert Astorino said of the project.

Throughout the day, guests were entertained with a celebratory balloon launch and musical performance by the marching band from Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains.

A new indoor seating lounge, a play zone for younger ones and a new direct entrance into the facility has also been added.

Over braised short ribs and salad provided by X20 Xaviar's on the Hudson's Peter X. Kelly, nearby residents took the opportunity to share personal memories of the location.

Pamela Anderson of Girls Scouts Heart of the Hudson affiliate remembers it as the first outdoor mall she allowed her daughters to visit by themselves as teenagers. As a resident of Mt. Vernon, she has also seen it as a one-stop shop for her own shopping needs over the years.

“It allows for all economic levels,” she said of the price ranges found in the stores and restaurants. “It’s also a place you can go to for dinner and then stop and buy a gift for someone."

There are 685 free parking spaces and a 75,000 square-foot expansion to Macy’s has been added retail space.

“We pride ourselves on shopping locally and the Cross County Shopping Center has been filling that need for close to six decades,” said Astorino.

This week’s events will include a new Public Art Installation with ArtsWestchester this Thursday at 2 p.m., followed by a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m.

A free concert with Beatles’ cover band Strawberry Fields will take the stage  Friday at 6:30 p.m. and a Remarkable Restaurants Tasting Event sponsored by Westchester Magazine will take place Saturday.

Two Fashion Shows and Makeovers with WAG Magazine will close the week’s festivities on Sunday.
