Bronxville Man Hit by Car Succumbs to Injuries

BRONXVILLE, N. Y. – A Bronxville man died Saturday as a result of injuries he sustained after being struck by a car last Monday.

Alfred Copeland, 85, was crossing the street from the corner of Garden Avenue when he was struck on Pondfield Road, by a taxi traveling eastbound, police said.

The car, a 2006 Crown Victoria is owned by Cross County Taxi, according to police reports. The driver, William O’Hara, 68, from New Rochelle, holds a license to operate a cab from the village, police said.

O’Hara was interviewed by Bronxville Police but no charges have been made.

“At this juncture, it appears as though sun glare may have contributed to the accident,” Sgt. Steve Gallo said. “The case will be referred to the Westchester County District Attorney’s office for further review.”

Initially, police said it looked as though Copeland only suffered minor injuries, when he was treated at the scene and transported to Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle.

“He sustained multiple contusions and abrasions to his right side, but was conscious and alert when speaking to a Bronxville Detective the day after the accident,” Gallo said.

No word on when services will be held for Copeland.
